The heat of summer begs for a cooling, refreshing drink. Rum comes to our rescue yet again with the incomparable mojito!
So full confession here: the very first mojito I had was a delicious pre-mixed bottled version. Ordered on a whim in a BBQ restaurant while on vacation, it came to the table ice cold and mildly misty. I'd never had one before and I didn't know what to expect. The first sip overwhelmed me with a sweet, refreshing mint wave. It didn't take long for me to decide I would need to master this recipe.
This one did not come as easy, though. I tried a few different variations, constantly coming up with something acceptable but not quite on the par of my first taste. I started to wonder if maybe that first one wasn't as good as I'd remembered. Perhaps I'd been swept away by the good company of friends in a place I'd never visited and the elusive magic of trying something brand new.
That growing disappointment faded immediately upon tasting this version!
To make this refreshing drink, you will need:
1 oz. lime juice
1 Tablespoon sugar
6 fresh mint leaves
2 ozs golden rum
Club soda
Ice for the glass
You will also need some basic barware. For this, you will need:
A shot glass with actual .5 ounce markings
A muddler
A highball glass for serving
The mojito goes down easy, but takes a little work to pull together. Combine the juice, sugar, and mint leaves in the glass and muddle until the sugar is dissolved (no more crunching). Add your rum and fill the glass with ice. Top the whole thing off with club soda and sip away a hot summer day.
