Left to my own devices, I would be on a boat right now, watching the waves lap against the sides, churning into a beautiful froth. And I would be doing so with a rum drink in my hand. Well, one of my plans is going to come true this month!
Rum is rightfully associated with island life. as sugarcane was introduced to the islands, it was cleverly fermented. First uses were, as always, medicinal. But if wasn't long before its fun side came to the forefront. It became a heavily traded commodity, bringing it to the attention of smuggling pirates. Isn't it nice to just be able to drive down the street for it now?
Nowadays, you will find there are several varieties of rum. For this month, we are focusing on golden rum. Golden rum is essentially white rum with some life experience. It has been aged in oak barrels for up to three years, achieving a smooth, delicious taste (and the ability to be subbed for white rum in recipes).
To embrace this month's taste, let's start with a classic: the Daiquiri. Before you picture an adult slushy, let's start with the original. If you need a celebrity endorsement, you needn't look any further than Hemingway (again). This is the version he fell in love with in Cuba.
To make this refreshing drink, you will need:
2 oz. rum
1 oz. lime juice
.5 oz. simple syrup
Ice for shaking
You will also need some basic barware. For this, you will need:
A shot glass with actual .5 ounce markings
A cocktail shaker
A martini glass for serving
As always, prep is simple! In your ice-filled shaker, combine the rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake it up until it's good and frosty, then simply pour into your martini glass. Now close your eyes and imagine the ocean lapping against the side of your boat (or the shore of your own personal beach).
